Since 2011, the Boston Compact has served as the table where traditional barriers between our district, charter, and Catholic schools are broken down and where collaboration to improve all student learning is prioritized.

Boston Schoolchildren’s Consortium brings leaders from district, Catholic, independent, & charter sectors together to tour schools
2011
The Mayor, BPS, School Committee Chair, and charter leaders sign their first “Compact”
2012
BPS leases three vacant buildings to charter schools

The Compact runs a leadership development program with COSEBOC to strengthen the equity lens that school leaders bring to their work

Charter schools change their school bus times to save BPS $1m/year in transportation costs
2017
Teach Plus and the Compact launch the Boston Educators Collaborative
2018
With CPLAN, the Compact pilots school climate survey questions for BPS, charter, and Catholic school families, providing the first-ever comparable, non-academic data

The Compact convenes school leaders with the Boston Public Health Commission to learn about and respond to COVID-19 circumstances

Leaders continue collaborating on transportation and communicating student enrollment decisions

The Compact and The Teachers’ Lounge host our 10th annual Diversity Career Fair to recruit teachers who reflect the diversity of our students

Mayor Wu and the Compact launch citywide attendance campaign to address chronic absenteeism

Mayor Menino convenes charter and district leaders with a charge of working together for the good of all students
2012
The Archdiocese of Boston and Boston Catholic Schools join the Compact
2013
Compact leaders adopt an agenda to support communities of practice serving students with disabilities, Black and Latino boys, and multilingual learners
2014
Charter schools change their school bus times to save BPS $1m/year in transportation costs
2015
With the endorsement of Mayor Walsh, the Compact explores the possibility of unifying the enrollment process for district and charter schools
2018
Creation of the Roxbury Special Education Network to improve outcomes for students with disabilities across all sectors
2019
Partnering with Eskolta, Compact schools work on transforming learning for students who are at risk of not graduating high school
2021
BPS, charter, and Catholic school leaders use their compact to share promising practices including hybrid (remote and in-person) instruction and building upgrades
2023
Establishment of a two-year professional learning community focused on multi-tiered systems of support for schools across the Compact
2025
Working with DayofAI, the Compact launches a professional learning community focused on Gen AI as a tool for improved outcomes for multilingual learners with IEPs
2026
Special Education leaders from BPS, charter, and Catholic schools team up to improve procedures for students with disabilities moving between schools
